Solar Superstorm

The solar storm of 1859, also known as the Solar Superstorm, which occurred during solar cycle 10, was the most powerful solar storm in history that is recorded. It lasted from August 28 to September 2. Also the largest flare  of a solar storm was seen on this Superstorm, taking only 17 hours to reach the Earth. This is very strange becuase a solar flare normally reach the Earth between 3 to 4 days. Also the biggest geomagnetic storm ocurred and the aurorae was seen all over the wordl.

Dangers of Solar Storms

The biggest danger is for satellites, because they are out the magnetosphere of  the Earth, who is the only protection for this type of storms. But they also can cause communication problems for aircraft travelling near the poles. Another effect but no danger is that aurorae can be seen farther south than normally.

The particles released in Solar Storms can interfere with technology on Earth, such as electrical power grids, communication systems and as told before, with satellites.

What are Solar Storms?

A Solar Storm is an event in which activity of the Sun interferes in the Earth's magnetic field. These types of storms can be quite harmful. They are caused by solar flares and coronal mass ejections that formed a "solar wind", that is a gust of charged particles which can impact into the Earth's magnetic field if it goes in this direction. The impact can generate a light show as a geomagnetic storm, and the storm can last for several days under the right conditions.

Welcome! :-)

Hello, I'm Rubén and this is my blog. In it we will talk about the phenomenon called Solar Storms and how it affect us and the electricity on Earth.
